Congratulations to all involved in this production truely a memorable evening and some great performances!
"It is an outstanding piece. Light and shade. Humour, plus dark and disturbing, plus raw emotion. Extremely well written and structured. Thoughtful direction and some truly fine performances. This sort of piece is what the theatre club is all about". Rick Peckham
A sharp and touching slice of English life set in a Northern Pub owned by a savagely bickering husband and wife. "Two" is a series of short vignettes that skilfully combines pathos and humour involving fourteen characters which can be played either by two or fourteen actors (or any number in-between!). The characters include an ageing womaniser, a troubled old man and a lost Elvis fan!
During the course of the evening these assorted customers pass through, including a little boy left behind by his father - an event which triggers a movement towards a fragile reconciliation between the pub couple, as their own dark tragedy is revealed....
“Two”, as reviewed by Michael Billington in the Guardian, is described as; “a sharp, salty, quick-fire evocation of the surface gaiety and underlying melancholia of English pub life.”
It was first performed as “To” at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton in 1989 and transferred to the Young Vic the following year, now titled “Two”. That year it also won the Manchester Evening News “Best Play” award.
The action takes place over one night in a pub and is written so that two people can play all 14 parts, from a 7 year old, through the age spectrum to a 70 year old.
