PRODUCTION: A Hundred Years Old (Drama) PRODUCTION DATE: November 1953 GROUP: The New Amateur Dramatic Society DIRECTED BY: Joy Sinden STAGED: St. Andrews Hall, Burgess Hill SYNOPSIS: "A Hundred Years Old" was written in 1909. It is a simple story of Spanish family life; but the characters are handled with extreme simplicity, poetry and charm, and provide a fine example of expert technique in smooth and facile play writing. Nothing is forced; no labouring for effects. The story concerns the preparations for the birthday celebration of a most likeable and discerning centenarian, living in the small Andalusian town of Arenales. PLAYWRIGHTS: Serafin & Joaquin Alvarez Quintero. English translation by Helen & Harvey Granville-Barker. BHTC NOTES:This production was entered into the Sussex Rural Community Council's Drama Festival and was well received (see attached review) |
