PRODUCTION: A Phoenix Too Frequent (One Act Comedy Drama) PRODUCTION DATE: March 1968 DIRECTED BY: Douglas Kershaw STAGED: Marle Place, Burgess Hill SYNOPSIS: This version of the famous Matron of Ephesus, tells the story of a maid and her pious widow employer, who mourns for the death of her recently deceased husband. The maid is not quite so pious, yet both women begin to suffer the pangs of a self-imposed hunger and there are signs that they are also unhappy over the loss of male company. However, it's not until a handsome guard appears that the widow begins regretting withdrawing from the world. PLAYWRIGHT: Christopher Fry BHTC NOTES: This production originally doubled with 'The Sponge Room' in March 1968, but was then also used as the clubs entry into the April 1968 County Drama Festival. This joint production was performed at Marle Place due to the fire in the Park Centre the previous November. In 2006, BHTC again produced this one act play which was directed by Anthony Hole who played Teigus the soldier in this production. To see the images from the 2006 version, click HERE
