PRODUCTION: Dear Charles (Comedy)
PRODUCTION DATE: June 1968
DIRECTED BY: Keith Jefferies
STAGED: Oakmeads School Hall, Burgess Hill
SYNOPSIS: Set in Paris in the Spring, the play concerns Denise, a charming lady novelist living alone with her three delightful children. The only sign of a father is the portrait of “Dear Charles” displayed in a place of honour, but then the arrival of an Englishman, a Frenchman and a Polishman from Denise’s past, starts providing rich comic opportunities...
PLAYWRIGHT: Alan Melville was a playwright, revue author and lyricist well-known in the forties and fifties.
As well as writing a number of long running plays, he also wrote lyrics for Arthur Askey in the musical 'Bet Your Life' and collaborated with Ivor Novello on his last show 'Gay's The Word'. He lived in Brighton and died in 1983.
BHTC NOTES: After a fire ruined the stage and dressing room areas of the Park Centre in December 1967, Oakmeads School kindly offered their stage facilities so larger productions could still be produced by the club, whilst all necessary repairs were made.
