PRODUCTION: Flowering Cherry (Drama) PRODUCTION DATE: April 1980 DIRECTED BY: John Poulson STAGED: The Martlets Hall, Burgess Hill SYNOPSIS: An aging and dreaming man finds he cannot relate to ordinary office life and isolating himself from those around him, he escapes into his apple orchard, leaving his wife to hold the home together. PLAYWRIGHT: Robert Bolt (August 15, 1924 – February 12, 1995). His first stage play was 'Flowering Cherry' and he went on to win two best screenplay Oscars. One was for the movie version of 'A Man for All Seasons,' for which he did the screenplay for as well as authoring the play. The second was for his collaboration with David Lean for 'Doctor Zhivago,' from the novel by Boris Pasternak. Bolt also wrote 'Ryan’s Daughter,' 'Vivant! Vivant! Regina!,' and 'Lady Caroline Lamb.' BHTC NOTES: Although the discovered poster for the production states the show was 'Entered in the Mid Sussex Arts Association Festival,' at present, no information has come to light on how the play was judged or received. |
