PRODUCTION: The Day After The Fair (Drama) PRODUCTION DATE: October 1991 DIRECTED BY: Joan Collins STAGED: The Martlets Hall, Burgess Hill SYNOPSIS: Based on a short story by Thomas Hardy, this is a tale of an illiterate servant girl who falls in love with a stranger, Charles, and convinces her mistress to write him love letters on her behalf. Through writing the letters and reading his replies her mistress falls in love with Charles and he with her, but - innocent of the deception - Charles proposes to the servant girl. Only when it is too late does he discover the true identity of his love. PLAYWRIGHT: Frank Harvey (11 August 1912 - 6 November 1981) based on a story by Thomas Hardy (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928).
