Through writing the letters and reading his replies her mistress falls in love with Charles and he with her, but - innocent of the deception - Charles proposes to the servant girl. Only when it is too late does he discover the true identity of his love. PLAYWRIGHT: Frank Harvey (11 August 1912 - 6 November 1981) based on a story by Thomas Hardy (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928).
