PRODUCTION: The Accrington Pals (Wartime Drama) PRODUCTION DATE: November 1998 DIRECTED BY: Jacky Hilary STAGED: Burgess Hill Theatre SYNOPSIS: The affects of World War I on the lower classes in Accrington, England are experienced between freinds, family and lovers. The unrequited love between lead characters Tom and May is a through line, as well as their conflicting personalities of socialism vs. capitalism. The play begins during a day in the life of these remarkable people, as yet uninterrupted by casualties of war. As the story unfolds, we see the local men volunteering to join the battalion, leaving to fight in the Great War and the impact that it has on their wives and families left at home. Moving, thought-provoking and often very funny, 'The Accrington Pals' paints a very human picture of civilian life during wartime. PLAYWRIGHT: Peter Whelan (born 1931) is a British playwright. BHTC NOTES: As part of preparing the publicity for this production Jim & Sue Wilson visited the town of Accrington. More information about this is detailed on the club's 'Season 1998-1999 History' page. |
