PRODUCTION: One For The Road (Comedy Drama) PRODUCTION DATE: March / April 2001 DIRECTED BY: Anthony White & Helen Clapperton STAGED: Burgess Hill Theatre SYNOPSIS: Everybody has a dream. Or several. But how many of us live them out? Willy Russellīs One For The Road is a wickedly funny comedy about a man who makes his final attempt to break out of the confines of his normal middle class existence before middle-age holds him back for ever. Would-be wanderer Dennis lives with his wife, Pauline, and their heard-but-not-seen child in a house on an estate that looks like every other house on the estate. Pauline believes she is living the modern dream, but for Dennis, life is a suburban nightmare, endless evenings at social clubs of every conceivable variety and friends who take social climbing to such levels that social mountaineering is perhaps more apt. As Dennisīs desire for freedom grows, the veneer the others have glued down over their lives begins to peel away. You wonīt believe what you find underneath. PLAYWRIGHT: Willy Russell |
